A Long Week And A Sick Kitty

Happy Wednesday friends. This week feels like it has gone on forever and it’s only Wednesday. My big boy Gus has been under the weather and not feeling good.

It started last week when it seemed as though Gus was having trouble using the bathroom. He would go into the kitty box and scratch and scratch and come out and visibly strain to use the bathroom usually on the rug outside the door. I am going to spare you any other details than that.

He seemed to be feeling better one day and then not himself the next. I called the vet on Tuesday and got him in that same afternoon. They did an X-ray to determine if he had any kind of blockage other than a hairball or poop. Luckily he didn’t. They gave him medicine to help get him on track and he is back to his old self. He is romping and playing with Kitty Kitty again. It makes my heart so happy. I hate to see him moping around and not being himself.

This boy is feeling much better.

Over the weekend my husband and I cut the tree that had fallen across the road a couple of weeks ago. We had cut it off of the road and just moved it to the side of the road. It still looked pretty bad. We cut all of it and carried it away from the road. It was a beautiful day to be outside.

We also put my bottle tree in the yard. This is was a Christmas present from two years ago!!!!! It has been in our garage all this time. I tried to put the tree up one day by myself but it is metal and heavy and I couldn’t even lift it. I finally talked my husband into getting his auger and drilling a hole for it. It took all of ten minutes. I guess we both thought it was going to be more of a job than it was. But it is up and I love it. I only had six bottles to put on it. I ordered a few more but I really want to collect bottles that I find in thrift stores or get at garage sales. I think this will be fun and they will be unique.

I can’t wait to add more bottles in many different colors.

I made beef stew on Sunday. I put it in my crockpot and let it slow cook. I had some leftover sourdough bread that we had with it and it was delicious.

My sister had a doctor’s appointment in Knoxville on Friday. I went with her and we did a little shopping afterwards. Look at these bunnies and Easter decorations at T.J Maxx.

I had hoped to find some cute things for Valentine’s Day but they had nothing. Of course they did put their Valentines decorations out before Christmas so I guess they sold out.

A fellow blogger mentioned a poem by Ted Kooser. I loved the poem so I ordered one of his books and I am so loving these poems. While I was at the Vet with Gus I had to wait almost two hours for everything they were doing. I sat in my car and read almost this entire book. It so helped calm this kitty mama’s nerves and take my mind off of worrying about my big Gus.

This is my favorite poem in this book, so far. I haven’t quite finished the book.

So yes it feels like a long week. Knowing my Gus is feeling better is wonderful. But still a bit of a crazy week. I think I need some down time to reflect and just chill. I think that may have to come from within me though. One of the things I most enjoyed this week was watching a man with his three dogs. I was parked at the vet clinic. A man at a house next door opened his front door. Out bounded three of the most beautiful big dogs I have ever seen. They almost looked like popcorn popping up and down and all over each other. They were so happy. He had a fenced yard and they ran and ran and played until they flopped down beside each other. I could see their tongues lolling out. They were just precious. You never know when you are going to catch a glimpse of something that will stick with you always.

How is your week going?

Lights, Camera, Action!! A New Year A New Word

Hello and Happy Wednesday. We are well into the new year. I have been thinking a lot about my word of the year. When I pick a word I visit it several times throughout the year to see if I am actually living up to my word. I didn’t know if I even wanted to do that this year. We know things will happen as they are going to happen. But I still think focusing on something that can be positive, can’t be a bad thing. So, I decided that my word of the year will be “action”.  Why this word? I have a lot of things in my life that I need to take action on. I have things that need to be dealt with and I feel that action is what I need to get me going. Action can actually lead to a lot of things. Action can stand for a lot of things. That is my hope for the new year. I will keep you posted on how it is going.

Last week I had the chance to visit one of my favorite thrift stores. I wasn’t really looking for anything particular. I did find a couple of flower vases, pots whatever you want to call them. I thought I would put my orchid pots down in them. They were only a couple of dollars each. I also saw a large platter with spring flowers on it. I kept picking the platter up and putting it back down. This is always a sign that I should buy it. I didn’t get the platter. Now I regret that I didn’t and I haven’t had a chance to get back and see if it is still there.

Speaking of orchids. I mentioned in a previous post that I always thought my orchid Zsa Zsa might be two orchids in one large pot. I received Zsa Zsa when my sister Pat died, which has been almost two years ago. Zsa Zsa the orchid came from a flower shop and was given to me to keep after the funeral. My friends from work had sent her and requested that I be the one to keep her. As if anyone could tear her out of my hands.

She was beautiful and in full bloom at the time. As a matter of fact she has bloomed constantly on one stem or another since I got her. She is the prettiest shade of pink. She was one of my first orchids.

The reason I call her Zsa Zsa is because when my sister was in the hospital and getting ready to start chemo treatments. I would go in and comb her hair for her. I told her I was making her as beautiful as Zsa Zsa Gabor. So I started calling her Zsa Zsa and she started calling me Eva, Zsa Zsa’s sister. There actually was another famous Gabor sister, Magda. When I explained to my husband that I now have to have another orchid so that I could name it Magda, he didn’t quite get it. He thinks I have too many orchids now. Anyway I still have texts from my sister where we referred to each other as Zsa Zsa and Eva. They are precious to me and so is Zsa Zsa.

The orchid Zsa Zsa has thrived.  Mr sister did not. She passed away a short time after her stay in the hospital. It has now been almost two years.  I never repotted Zsa Zsa because she has always had such amazing growth. But I started to notice some changes and I thought I had better repot her. I was scared. I procrastinated. I ordered new clear pots. I finally did it!!!!  Sure enough there were two orchids in that pot. There was a lot of root rot and I am not sure if they will both survive. I repotted them in separate pots and had to trim a lot of the stems back. Of course I named the second one Eva and if I lose them it will break my heart.

This is after they have been separated and repotted. I am praying they will survive. Sorry for the bad lighting. It was night and I don’t have a lot of extra light in this room.

I had a lot of trimming to do on these roots. But there is still good green in some of the roots. I have a large utility sink in my laundry room and that is where I always water the orchids and trim away any dead roots.

Sunday I decided to make chocolate chip cookies. I had a bag of chocolate chips that needed to be used. I am trying to shop my pantry before buying things. I told my husband we could probably live out of our pantry for a couple of months without going to the grocery store. I think it would be fun to try.

They were delicious!!!

I took most of the cookies to work for my coworkers.

We have had some really cold weather and lots of rain. Some of the local schools were closed on Monday because of flash flooding. I was able to make it safely to work and back home.

This is a field beside a small creek. This is after the water had gone down several inches.

I have been knitting the most wonderful scarf. I say this because the yarn is so soft and squishy. I love the way the different pink colors fade and blend together. I am almost finished. I think I may be a little sad to see it finished. It has been so much fun to knit. But I also can’t wait to wear it.

I have also been working again on the heart cross stitch. I am getting really close to finishing. I still have to decide how to frame it. Any suggestions?

If I had this one to do over I think I might have made several different colors of hearts. Oh well. Maybe next time.

So that is what I have been up to. How about you?

Sunday Morning Coffee Share

Happy Sunday and the last day of the year. Do you have big plans for the New Year? I don’t. I have to work tomorrow so I am sure I will be in bed early. The new year will arrive right on time whether I am awake to see it or not. I am perfectly happy with that.

You can see I am enjoying my coffee from my new mug that my niece gave me for Christmas. I love it!!!

I also made a blueberry cobbler to enjoy with my coffee. I am happy to share.

If we were sharing a coffee or cup of tea or hot chocolate, I am sure we would talk about the year coming to an end and, the new one starting fresh and new with tons of possibilities. What excitement that stirs in my heart.

I think first we would talk about the weather. It is beautiful today the sun is shining so bright. It is cold a chilly 38F but the sun makes it feel much warmer. Yesterday was such a gray day. It was gloomy and cold. Just perfect for staying at home and doing nothing. Today the sun is shining so bright it hurts my eyes. I think I will take a long walk later.

What I am working on:I have put the knitting aside for just a bit and have gone back to working on my heart cross stitch. Guys I have been working on this for three years. I had originally planned it for Valentine’s and as soon as Valentine’s Day has passed I put it up and forget about it. I think that because I love hearts so much it would be something to have displayed all the time.

I will also repot one of my orchids today. It is huge and I think it is two orchids. I need to separate them. I will be able to tell more about them when I get into it.

What I am reading: I finally finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I have to say the last third of the book was much better than the beginning. I am currently listening to an audio book by Danielle Steel, All That Glitters, and it is really good so far. I got several books for Christmas and I can’t wait to get started on those.

What I am wearing: Well pajamas currently. I had to work all week so I decided to take it easy this weekend. I will put more clothes on later.

What I am eating: Too many treats. So many goodies are left over from Christmas. I need to load them up and take them to the break room at work. I don’t make New Year’s resolutions but I would like to change my diet and start eating healthier.

What I am looking forward to: The new year, enjoying the remaining winter season and then spring, learning new things, spending time with family and loved ones, reading a ton of books, gearing up for a new season at work and just enjoying life.

What will your New Year look like.

Love your day your way!!!!

Are You Ready For A NewYear?

Well Christmas is over for another year. It’s hard to believe it is almost 2024. The years go by so quickly the older you get. I don’t like making New Year’s resolutions because I always seem to disappoint myself. I do like having a word for the year. My word last year was “celebrate”. I decided to celebrate as much as I could all year because life is short and it should be fun. I had a lot of celebrations in 2023.  I decided to take a look back at the different celebrations throughout the year. I am so blessed with such a wonderful family and friends.

In February we celebrated my niece for her Birthday.

Also a coworker brought Valentine’s Day goodies.

I made a butterfly tree to celebrate spring.

In April the hubs and I saw the musical production of Cats in Knoxville.

In April we also celebrated my birthday and my sister bought me a tiara.

In May we celebrated the end of my sister’s chemo treatments and I am happy to say she is still doing great and cancer free. Now that truly is a celebration.

In June we celebrated my niece and nephews’ birthdays. We did them together because the dates are close together.

My nephew is a drummer as you can tell by this drum cymbal.

End of June and the hubs and I had a great beach vacation at our favorite beach, Wrightsville Beach, in North Carolina.

August and we took a trip to Northern Europe to several Scandinavian countries. We also took my nephew Tyler with us.

In September I celebrated with two of my coworkers at their wedding.

Late September and we had a short Sister Trip to Gatlinburg Tennessee.

In Early October I got together with some of my cave friends for a trip to Northern California. We visited Shasta Caverns and Shasta Lake.

In October my great nephew Caleb turned 20. He is such a character he always keeps us laughing.

We also had a much needed Sister Lunch with several of the nieces and my nephew Tyler.

December was Tyler’s Birthday and we had a cook out and cake at his house.

And finally it’s December and Christmas with the whole family.

And my hubs and I and all of the fur babies, Gus, Kitty Kitty, Allie, Sadie and Izzie hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and that you are planning a wonderful new year!!

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Do you ever choose a word for the year. I am currently thinking about my word for 2024. I know it will come to me.

As I said Celebrate was my word for 2023 and I made sure to have as many celebrations as possible. But I actually believe that our best celebrations come just by being who we want to be and doing what we want to do.
